yea, i agree...just ask and you'll find people (i'm one of them) who don't mind dropping you a list of free sites and clean entrances to list...i commonly do it for people starting new link type sites...and i do it expecting little traffic to begin with...but over time it builds...and you have a relationship with that webmaster...
and also sponsors sites and such too can be used to fill in...

but link type sites are hard every day work...getting traffic takes alot of time and work..i highly suggest you really try not to make money off the place for a long time yourself...and resign to it being a long term project that you are building and keeping clean for future benifits...doing it that way can help you grow faster...the spammer it is the slower you grow...

i hate going to link lists i've used over the years and seeing some of them(not GGs) have like 300k banners at the top of thier pages and having several banners there with the ultra heavy ones...after all more than half the surfers are still on dial up..they never get a chance to even see shit that huge(so don't fall into that trap)...--rant over
