A while back there was a virus that would change the DNS settings on gateways through javascript. It is also possible that is what happened, and, one of the DNS servers happened to get shut down. It would be interesting to see what the previous DNS settings were.

That's what a did! It automatically gets my DNS from the server. Thanks for the good read.
