HEHEHEH.. usually we don't mix genders in sauna. And yes, spanking with that weird old branch is normal. They make a big thing here of smacking each other with leafy birch branches (vihta) in the sauna. It is supposed to increase circulation, ease muscle pains, etc. Finns do lots of odd things, trust me.

As far as I vaguely remember we were faaaaar into the Koskenkorva which might explain the lack of gender separation

Actually I loved the Finnish weirdness. Like one time i was camping and fishing by a lake with apparently no house for kms...a big old lumberjack style guy with a giant knife comes out of the forest - and I'm like shiiiit ... but he just sits down and then like says 3 words per hour but stays there all evening seemingly very happy with the "socializing" ....VERY un-Danish types
