And a good thought it is too, Alex. It will probably take more than just reworking the title / metas, though, to avoid being duplicates. Even so, it's something I'll try to work in.
For my latest site, which I have yet to submit anywhere due to other chaos going on here, I've included several paras of text in the galleries and on the main page in the hope that SEs will pick up on it to some extent. That would need rewriting 8 times over if I were to include a main in each "folder" site, but, as you say, I can see some potential benefits in that approach.
On the other hand, I gather that SEs attach some importance to how many pages link to a given page. Would you say that there's more benefit in having a main with unique text in each folder, with only the index linking to it, and with up to nine LLs linking to the index, or with one main containing some targeted text linked to by 8 individual index pages each with up to 9 LLs linking to it? Swings and roundabouts, I suspect, but I'll certainly look at tweaking things a little as you suggest.
