What is America coming too?
According to a letter from the FDA, General Mills' advertising violates the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The agency said claims that Cheerios ingredients can lower cholesterol within a certain amount of time, all while providing cancer-fighting and heart-healthy benefits, essentially makes Cheerios "a drug" by their definition. And no drug in this country can be legally marketed without an approved new drug application.

Cheerios is making Snake Oil claims. So Cheerios has to prove that their claims are true and are safe.

And really, it isnt so much about the fed harassing a company over advertising as their defining something as a drug because of it's beneficial properties and not because of its ingredients. What's next? RedBull? It gives you wings.

How the holy fuck does this subject deserve a thread title like that? It's fucking Cheerios for Christ's sake! I'd bet to most people, other than teenrave because he's an ignorant cunt, the FDA's demands make perfect sense.

I think its a symptom of America becoming over-regulated, but even more than that, the broad way some laws are used by the federal government. Of course, "free" men will agree or disagree as they see fit. Some wont give a shit.

All advertising claims should be checked. It wasn't too long ago snake oil salesmen were touting healing elixirs that would cure all ills. Even today we've got magical penis enlargement pills. Again I say advertising claims should be checked.

Those ads always come on when my wife and I are watching TV together. I just know she is sitting there thinking about ordering some.

I agree with the over-regulation to the fullest. They should have to have some type of proof. I don't see it being that complicated to say these claims are proven and can be checked at such website or consumer reports or such.

Well... The fiber in Cheerios is thought to be healthy and could lower cholesterol . So I dont think stating that is a problem.
I think the problem is that they are marketing it like a drug by stating that it will lower cholesterol x amount after taking/eating it x amount of time. |
