If I schedule a months worth of posts in wordpress , when does it ping the various services , when I hit the publish button or the scheduled publish date?

When a surfer hits your site, and wordpress realizes it is the first time that article has been viewed, it will do the pings at that time. Be forewarned, the surfer will see a slight delay if they are the first one to see the post, but, yes, pings are scheduled when the post is active.

And Lord, we are especially thankful for nuclear power, the cleanest, safest

I know for sure that the various services are pinged once the scheduled post turns into a published post among the latest releases.
On older releases, there was a bug as the various services were pinged everytime you save your post. That has been corrected by 2.5.1 if I'm correct! |

Well you know boys, a nuclear reactor is a lot like women. You just have to read the manual and press the right button

If you're still using an older version of WP, the plugin Maxblogpress Ping Optimizer will stop scheduled posts from being pinged until they are posted/active, it also prevents pinging from occurring when the post is updated.
