So I broke down and bought a mac...

Just the high end mac min, but I love the size of the thing. It's no super fast but more than sufficient for what I am doing. Running an IDE and browsing the web.

Other than trying to find software that does everything on the mac I am pretty impressed. It came with Tiger, I just wish the widgets on the dashboard stayed on the desktop.

Which browser is best? Should I switch to firefox? The one thing I cannot stand with safari is it opening shit in new windows even after I set it to open in a new tab.

Any ideas from you mac users would be great. I got Proteus for instant messnger and transfer for an ftp client.

What else am I missing? I wouldn't mind having PS7 or something but I am not about to go buy that again for mac right now.

Command Click a link to force it to open in a tab.
Safari is good since it stores all your passwords in your Keychain which can be viewed using your system admin password and it also displays the websites in your address book which Mail.app also uses.

Download Safari Enhance to turn on its debug menu.

Another very good Safari plugin

Compliments on the decision for mac

I watched the keynote address by Steve Jobs (on June 6th I think it was) and I never loved the mac as much as I do now! Apple FINALLY has set a partnership with Intel! Which means the Mac OS will (actually has already been able to run on a PC and steve jobs confessed this as he used the computer on stage for his presentations) run on Intel processors! Plus, software for Windows will, or it sounds like, will be universal on either environment.

Cool and it's about time! I still plan on getting the apple hardware though, even if it has an Intel processor in it (expected next year), its still kick ass!

I love my old G4. I just bought a 200 gig hard drive on eBay and it came with a ton of software including 10.4 and all the adobe creative suite stuff.

I've never bought software yet - I use Limewire :o)

I used to say the same thing, I got tired of all the windows shit and switched to linux like 8-9 mos ago. The one problem I found with linux is it took a lot of messing around just to get something stupid like embedded video to work and it was sporatic, but I stuck with it for the speed and reliability.

Getting this mac-mini has only wanted me to get a really fast mac

I like it , speed isn't super great at 1.45Ghz but it does what i need it to do and I know the laptop I plan on getting soon will be killer for speed.

Only thing that bums me out is that my Adobe versions i have for PC and shit don't work. Not sure what I am going to do about that, but I downloaded Poison and that is pretty nice, just don't see much for mac on there.

BTW, can you add memory to these Mac Minis? I think that would speed things up a ton, from 256MB to 512 or 1GB.

Just curious.

Mac mini has one ram slot that can hold a max of one gig. If you are running on only 256 you will see a huge increase in speed buy adding one gig.

Doesn't look too difficult for someone who is used to building computers. A little finesse and it looks like it will work fine.

Is there a good place to get mac upgrades? Kinda like pricewatch.com for pc?

now if that doesn't convince you to just pay Apple for the 1GB of ram.

knowing my luck, I would break the first tab. Then the rest would follow only due to the frustration of knowing that since the case would never sit right again anyhow, they might as well all be broken. Solidarity for Plastic retaining clips!

Putty knife works real well.

I like www.pricegrabber.com but any of the Mac mail order places usually have good deals.

Andy,

You may also want to look at Fire.

It handles AIM, ICQ, irc, (Jabber - back soon), MSN,
Yahoo! Messenger, and Apple Rendezvous.

I don't think Apple will be _releasing_ an OSX compatible with modern PCs. There's a few more parts in those boxes that differentiate the Mac from an x86 PC. It would have to recognize a PC BIOS for one.
I read at slashdot.org that there is a torrent making its rounds of an Intel x86-compatible MacOSX. Don't know what the hell this is or where it came from. For years there was a rumor (no, legend) of a PC running Mac OSX in Apple's possession. Maybe this is it's OS.

Apple will never release a PC compatible version of OSX...but if there's one in existence it'll eventually get leaked to the public.

I guess the mystery of what Apple's plans with there 64-bit OS and moving to Intel chips are.

Intel Shifts Pentium 4 to 64-Bits

This is good news for when I buy a new Mactel laptop next year as I will still be able to use all 512 terabytes of RAM that I was planing installing in it.
