That'll teach you to leave your sister unattended.....

How much is too much?
I am looking into outsourcing our video editing needs and have seen prices all over the board - some editors want an hourly rate (hell, as slow as I am, I should charge by the hour) and some want to be paid by the edited minute.
I know some of you have looked into this before so your input would be greatly appreciated. |

I have nothing to base this on, but if I knew the person & trusted them, then either would be fine. But if I had no idea who they were & was a bit hesitant, I'd go with the per-minute option because you'd never know how long it takes them to perform the task (where you'll know right away that they did X minutes of editing)

Again, nothing to base it on, but i never outsource by the hour as i feel they can rip me off, i mean, how do i know that it really took you four hours and not two?

And if they're as slow as me, it would cost me a fortune!

Have you considered giving 'em a small amount of work, pay 'em by the hour and calculate the time/output unit of measure, then offer to pay by that unit if it meets your needs?

When I have previously had editing done by others I paid on a per minute basis. Admittedly there was much more converting than actual editing to be done but I still felt happier knowing what the bill was going to be. The only way I would go for a per hour basis is by giving them a look at the work and get them to give me a quote for an estimate. Anyone who knows what they are doing should be able to get it close.

Kids are great, Appu. You can teach them to hate the things you hate and they practically raise themselves now-a-days, you know, with the internet and all

That's hard to calculate. For movies I usually get fix prices and also for trailers. I also would do it on a fixed basis, per clip. The price of it depends a bit to the amount of cuts you need. If you need fast trailers and cut it down to a minute or second, it would cost more than compared to a whole movie of 90 minutes. But trailers usualy always cost more if you break it down on a per second basis

Yeah I'd go with an agreed flat rate. If you don't have them under your watchful eye, you can't know how they are spending their time. Get a quote and everyone can be happy. If they are a pro, they should know how long it will take and therefore what to charge.

Sometimes I find I just have to do it all myself - just with there were 40 hours in each day. Thanks for the heads up.

I would try the flat rate first. If your vendor want to get paid hourly try this. Give him a small job and see how long it takes. You can use the job as a guide for all the tasks from thereafter. I am so glad my content provider does all the editing for me or I would be in the same position you are. Good luck Papagmp. I'am so dyslexic I thought your name was pagapmp "page pimp"

I can relate - very dyslexic myself - even have a t-shirt that says "DYSLEXICS UNTIE" - thank god for spell checkers. After giving three editors a try, I decided to do most of the editing myself and hand off some of my other chores that are less open to expression. I'm not an expert but a hell of a lot better (even if I'm slower) that the guys I had try. Guess I'm just a little too picky. Anyway - we're getting a few of the 100+ shoots that I have onto the site and it's looking much better. Feedback and recomendations are always appreciated. PapaGMP - now also know as PagePimp. |
