Do you know any good book that explains how it all works?

I had nice experiences with Google taking some of my sites in good positions (for a while) but the truth is I dont know much.

If you give me some advice of where to look for info id really apreciate it
Thanks,

Annie

I would probably learn via seo forums instead of books for the reason that the search engines are always changing and information can become outdated very fast. However, you could pick up the basics from a book like this one by Brad Callen maybe.

Lowry - I have been checking out his software, SEO Elite and Keyword Elite. Do you or anyone else for that matter have any experience with this software?

There are soooooo many SEO oriented boards, sites, articles and tutorials. Why get a book? Just read SEO articles for the basics (make sure they're up to date).

If anyone had that book, they'd be crazy to sell it.
One things for sure I wouldn't come to forums looking for SEO insights, all you will find is self proclaimed experts regurgitating each others bile.

I'd be wary of SEO forums too, if people claim to know too much it's sure enough they wouldn't discuss it on a public forum.

You want to be looking for the basics then work on various things that over time that make a difference.
What works for one site doesn't mean it works for another.

Using Google webmaster tools is a big help as you can monitor your progress and get an idea on what you need to work on.

webworkshop.net has up to date articles that are very well written. They also have a forum. Keep in mind with any forum you will find on seo. There are a few that know what they are talking about. They might point you in the right direction but they are not going to tell you all their secrets. Be careful and use your own common sense.

Good points on seo forums and you are all correct. I would still indeed visit popular seo oriented forums and read all you can. You certainly should not accept anything you read as 100% accurate just because you saw a post on it somewhere.

Once you have a good understanding of the basics, you can do your own experimenting and see what works for you and your sites.

Mr. Spock - I have not had any experience with that software.

It's a moving target with enough books written on it to fill a library, all out of date by the time they hit the bookshelves.

Visit Web Monkey for free advice and tutorials on all things web and for links to other great resources.

For SEO and SE registration, articles, tutorials and actually doing it, go to Tooter and browse a while. Join. It's free for the first month, then you decide how much to pay (he suggests $10 per year, but it's up to you). I've added my affiliate code, which is easy enough to remove. This guy does his research and stays up to date.

The other great SE learning resource is Google. If you have an Adwords account, see its very useful baggage of tips and tutorials. If not, go to sign up for anything with them and follow the links instead.

AVOID forums for SEO until you have far more experience. They are full of smoke, mirrors, rumours, superstition and just plain bad advice which you need to be able to filter out.

Reading about SEO is largely a waste of time. It's like riding a bicycle: you learn by doing.

But like bicycle, it never hurts to have someone show you the basics On the net, that means reading, I think. I agree there's way too much info about it out there, some of it outdated, some plain wrong, and some that there's no way of knowing if it's wrong or right. Still, every webmaster should be familiar with the basics, IMO.

I got it, and it's been great for boosting traffic. The book was enough to give me an idea of how and why I was getting certain kinds of traffic and not others. Still have to take things further, though, and really monitor statistics and what's happening in the general SEO world.
