MediaWiki

Has anyone worked with this software? How the hell do you change the templates? And, has anyone done any template designs?

I've used mediawiki...that's a piece of shit script...there's was no spam protection feature and my site was overran by robots...you're better off going without in my opinion...however, if I recall correctly, there's no stylesheet, I had to use inline styles... and you have to change the localsettings.php page: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:LocalSettings.php

The newest version has skins to come with it, if you want to change them, http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Skins

I think they want this script to be as difficult as possible...best of luck...I know I wasn't helpful but I hate to see a brother hangin' with no response to a month old question...

Thanks
We have had this thing for some time and once in a while, I hope to find someone that knows how to design it. Maybe we will switch to something else.

I think most wiki scripts out there are horrible. Media Wiki is the most tested and there should be documents on how to change the templates on their site. (If I remember right you need to upload the data and then change a config file).

I have almost entirely split from programming PHP and moved entirely to Python (for many reasons). I have found MoinMoin to be a pretty nice wiki for Python.

Jim, what's the url to your mediawiki site? Is it a wiki for webmasters or something?

Yep, for webmasters. MMl had to turn it off recently because we were not using it and it was getting a lot of spam. There really is nothing to see since we turned it off.

And thanks Jester. Our designer and I looked at that months ago to no avail. I think I will give up on mediawiki.

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless

Both of my MediaWiki sites are not editable by people we have not specifically approved. Making them editable by registered users only supposedly helps a great deal, however - just change the access settings.

MediaWiki's template engine is annoying, to say the least. It is very powerful and you can do many cool, slick things with it, but it depends on if you want those cool, slick things and want to spend the time actually building them.
