Thumbs up A New Hope. Google To Start Punishing Pirate Sites In Search Results.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if all the pirate sites disappeared in Goggle.

An update to our search algorithms
8/10/12 | 10:30:00 AM
We aim to provide a great experience for our users and have developed over 200 signals to ensure our search algorithms deliver the best possible results. Starting next week, we will begin taking into account a new signal in our rankings: the number of valid copyright removal notices we receive for any given site. Sites with high numbers of removal notices may appear lower in our results. This ranking change should help users find legitimate, quality sources of content more easily—whether it’s a song previewed on NPR’s music website, a TV show on Hulu or new music streamed from Spotify.

Since we re-booted our copyright removals over two years ago, we’ve been given much more data by copyright owners about infringing content online. In fact, we’re now receiving and processing more copyright removal notices every day than we did in all of 2009—more than 4.3 million URLs in the last 30 days alone. We will now be using this data as a signal in our search rankings.

Only copyright holders know if something is authorized, and only courts can decide if a copyright has been infringed; Google cannot determine whether a particular webpage does or does not violate copyright law. So while this new signal will influence the ranking of some search results, we won’t be removing any pages from search results unless we receive a valid copyright removal notice from the rights owner. And we’ll continue to provide "counter-notice" tools so that those who believe their content has been wrongly removed can get it reinstated. We’ll also continue to be transparent about copyright removals.

How long until they start to get flooded with bogus copyright removal notices from sites ranked lower for a search term?

But seriously, this is GREAT news

Cool Google changes its search formula to address piracy

Time to slam the tubes!

Quote:
Hoping to mollify its entertainment industry critics,Google Inc.is tweaking its search engine to penalize websites suspected of hosting pirated music, videos, games and other copyrighted content.

The change was viewed as a concession to movie studios, music labels and television companies that have tried to lobby, cajole and, in some cases, sue Google into helping them shut down online piracy.

"Starting next week, we will begin taking into account a new signal in our rankings: the number of valid copyright removal notices we receive for any given site," wrote Amit Singhal, Google's senior vice president of engineering.

Singhal said that Google is deluged with notices from copyright holders such as music labels and movie studios alerting it to sites they believe contain pirated content. In the last 30 days, it processed requests to flag 4.3 million links to such websites, he said, more than the company received in all of 2009.

It looks like Google are using their "valid" removal list, and bogus claims might get penalized!

This is good news! I've been sending a lot of DMCA's lately..

I'll start including Google on these takedown notices.

I wonder if that will stop them from stealing our content???

lol, don't get too excited about another dim light at the end of the tunnel, let's first see if G follows through...

Would be great to clean up SE results, but you've got a good network of criminals who don't use or need G to share free porn. Time will tell

Make sure you send DMCAs straight to Google, and not the actual site.
