All the Powells are leaving public service. It's not a bad thing.
The FCC has taken huge steps backwards in the last 4 years, trying to allow high concentration of ownership in media, attempting to regular public morals, and generally doing a poor job of actually fulfilling it's mandate. Digital TV still isn't a full out reality because the FCC keeps letting special interest groups play with the regs, the timetable, and such. That is how we have ended up with 4 different standards of broadcasts instead of one unified system.
Good riddence to bad rubbish.
