Yeah, I loved his work in the 1980's, such as Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science and Sixteen Candles. I even liked the first Home Alone (although not in the same class as Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, etc). Unfortunately Home Alone was too big a success and in the 90s John Hughes stopped making intelligent teen movies and seemed to spend much of the rest of his career making really silly kid comedies (Home Alone series, Dennis series, Baby's Day Out series, etc) trying to re-create the Home Alone success. His work was never as good after that. However he may have been trying to get back to form and distance himself from the crap he made in the 1990s, because he started writing under a pseudonym (Edmond Dantes) in about 2000.
