Only 9 days since the winter solstice and already I notice that it is getting darker later.

What I cannot understand is that since the days started lengthening on the 21st then why is it getting dark later than it was getting dark 9 days before the solstice? Surely the "night" should start tonight (30th) at the same time as it did on the 12th? But it is earlier!

~~~ For those of you wondering why/how I am noticing the change when it is still only about 10 minutes: I regularly walk a friend's dog as he works during the day and I need the exercise. I tend to let the dog decide what length the walk, because being a husky he needs about three hours a day, but being about 13 years old, sometimes he is not up to it. So normally we turn for home when the dog turns for home. (Or if he realises he has overstretched himself he will head to the nearest station and expect me to take him home by train!) When he is feeling exceptionally well, he will try for a longer walk than usual, which is fine in the summer, but his owner likes him back before dark and so in the winter I am constantly juggling walk time with the time it gets dark. So I tend to notice the exact time it gets dark.
