I'm just starting out with tgp2 and after researching its history, the consensus seems to be that having so many non-clickable thumbs does tease the surfer. However, many early TGP2 people found that it pissed them off to the point that, instead of getting frustrated to the point of signing up with a sponsor, they just left the site never to return. i.e. no bookmarkers. Also, arguably, only 5 thumbs gives more room for creative advertising without the page becoming overly huge. And, it's also a bit easier to review a gallery without having to check which of the 5 thumbs actually have a link.
As a new surfer many years ago, thats why I personally hated to visit this kind of gallery. Then again, there is a compromise being made between being a little surfer friendly by having all 5 thumbs actaully go to a full size pic and limiting the content with more adds.
There are still a few sites around accepting galleries in the original format, and I too would be interested in their opinion and how their productivity fares in comparison to the current model.
