Paysite tour page sizes and loads

I know we have talked on other threads about continuing to build 800x600 for free sites, but I notice a lot of paysite tours seem to be built for 1024 wide or more. Also the page loads. I just looked at a recently released site, and page one of the tour was an 1130 kB load!

I'm working on a paysite design, is is now ok to build pages with such high loads? Or do you think they are missing out on potential customers because they are waiting so long for the page to load, they bag? Geeze, I remember the days of trying to keep it to 100kB, lol.
