Mac Help

I'm looking for a site like Trend's Home Visit that runs on Macs, for my sister. (A sort of one off online free scan for viruses, trojans, malware etc.) She recently visited a site and got a warning from her browser that it contained malware. I've told her that since she closed down the window on the warning rather than enter the site she will have avoided the malware, and anyway it is 99.9% probable that it was a Windows virus and not Mac compatible. But she is paranoid and won't use her computer for filling in forms, shopping, etc. So I need a Mac compatible virus scan site to send her to that will put her mind at rest.

A google search shows some options. Personally I've always found anti virus Mac software to cause lots of issues and to be way more trouble than they are worth.

I noticed that the latest version of Flash puts up lots of annoying alerts for no real reason at all. Really wish Flash would just finish dying and go away.

JAVA is all but dead and disabled by default.

If she is running Mountain Lion then it has Gate Keeper built-in. Even older Mac OSs have a form of Gate Keeper but with no front end interface.

I'm running Snow Leopard. I don't worry about viruses but since I do download a lot of software to try out I have some concern about trojans I run Little Snitch so that I'll know if something is opening up a port and sending information without my permission.

Since there's very little chance that a Mac will be infected with anything, there's just not enough demand for anyone to set up an online scanning website for Mac users. I've used Macs since 1984 and have never lost one minute of time worrying about, scanning for, or having to repair or restore a system because of a Mac virus, trojan or worm.

With that said, here are a few links for you.

Yea don't even worry about it. No virus software for even PC is keeping up with the JAVA exploits out there. So it doesn't even matter on PCs 99% of the time.

Use little snitch now and again and just make sure strange things aren't trying to communicate.
