What backup software do you use

Hi all,

I am looking for a new backup tool.
I was using Noton Ghost but it does not work anymore after a SmitFraud Attack. I have send an email a week ago and tried to call them for 29 euros but didn't come trough

I am now a week without backup so I begin to feel a little insecure now.

I am looking for something similar and was thinking about NovaBACKUP from novastore, anyone using this?
It must have a disaster recovery.

Thanks in advance.

Smart backup, it's a good backup software, and it's single.

Microsoft has something with a 90 day trial called, "Windows Live OneCare" that I downloaded for my wifes old laptop. Her old laptop is actually newer and better than the one I use. It has Anti-Virus, Anti-Spam, Firewall, Backup and a bunch of other crap we all use. So far, it has been working better than anything I have used.

I use NTI Shadow. Unlike other solutions I've tried it actually backs up your files in their native format.

Don't run Windows and also don't have to pay for backup software.

I have a 200 Gb Maxtor OneTouch external hard drive that I use as my primary backup.

I just plug it in, turn it on, push the button and go to bed. When not in use I leave it disconnected so a huge power surge can't get to it, and in case of evac due to impending big hurricane I just toss it in my duffle bag with my laptop and get the hell outta Dodge.

That sounds very similar to my plan

Only difference is I use Ghost to create the backup image on the external drive

Thats how I did it MtYum, it worked great.

I looked at "Windows Live OneCare" Jim, looks good only you get virus scan and firewall witch I already have and happy with.

NTI Shadow looks good thanks Lemmy its a lot cheaper then NovaBACKUP. Does it also have a disaster recovery?

Depends on what you mean. I don't think it can create a mirror of your entire HD, it just copies the files that you have defined.

Instead of Norton Ghost you could use Acronis Disk Image to make an image of the system drive. If something goes wrong, in about 5 minutes you could have your system right back .

If you want to backup software settings and files/folders, you could use Genie Backup manager. I'm using it to make a backup of my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles, Dreamweaver sites, Photoshop settings and actions, trillian profile etc.. 'cause it has real big database of free plugins you can download from their website. I use it to make everyday backups of the partition with sensitive data. Very usefull.

Great kitty kate, the Acronis Disk Image is what I am looking for
Thanks and the reviews say they have great support.

I like the Differential backup Ghost did not have that.

Cost me 50 euros again, damn Norton.

Actually, Ghost does do differential backups. I have mine set to do a full backup weekly, then differentials twice a day

I use Linux (Kubuntu). I burn a copy of my Home folder with the open source software packaged called K3b.

I got the Acronis tip from a friend who works in a computer repair shop. He said that they use it to make backup drive images for their clients. It surely worths its money, when I changed my hard drive all I had to do was to write the previous made image to the new drive and that was all. 5 minutes and I had the whole thing up&runing

Stuveltje, you are insane. I lost a hell of a lot a few years ago simply by not backing up often enough. If you don't back up at all, you are one day going to have a hell of a lot of trouble.

Hi Stu,

I only can tell you that you are very lucky so far. If you ever get a crash you will never forgive yourself for not backing up.
My advice is buy an external harddrive and Acronis (they sell it at bol.nl)
so you always have all your stuff save even when your house is on fire you only have to grab the harddisc.

I've been using Retrospect for the past couple of years. I have a few terabytes that get backed up daily.

Having used almost every backup program out there and having been screwed a few times with worthless backups my simple solution is now a drag and drop to an external drive which I trade out every week just in case. My folders are organised so I only have to move two folders and done! Very easy and I can move the drive between my laptop and desktops.

my puter crashed 3 times, well the last time it crashed i indeed lost all on my harddisk, but i have most of my stuff, at the hosting and in gmail email boxes , that are my backups, i did made some backup years ago, to be sure i made 4 copies, i tested them all and they all worked, till the time i realy needed it, then i was lucky that only one backup worked, so since then i use gmail accounds, my hostings. the only thing i never got back was some content setts which i lost that time also. i think you are all right and i should take more care of my backups
