The Shutdown/Debt Ceiling
Hey
Was just pondering ... we get bombarded with breaking news about the US senate/congress and their battles about the government shutdown, raising the debt ceiling and all that ... But, is it actually felt in everyday life? Like is something actually not working/shut down? Or is it just all the foreign DC correspondents caught up in the spin and flooding Europe with news about a few politicians playing games ??? |

Depends on if you work for the government or not. Also if you provide services to the government workers, like food, or if you sell stuff to the tourist that visit national parks.
Here in south Florida charter fishermen or really hurting because Biscayne National Park is closed. But the real big issue is if the debt ceiling isn't raised and America defaults on its debts. We have a culprit congress and is being controlled by lobbyists and bible thumpers. ![]() |

Jesus, have you lot not sorted that out yet? It was ages ago that I first posted a rant on this subject! I thought it would take a day or two of both sides posturing, then one or other would see sense!

Instead of rasing the debt ceiling why not spend less

What a great idea. Lets just cut health care, bridge and road maintenance, have the rich pay less taxes and cut funding for education because no way would it be a good idea to spend less on the military or giving away money to other counties.

Common misconception re: the debt ceiling. It has nothing to do with future spending, this about money that has already been spent (for things like unfunded wars, etc.).

Indeed and as such its probably inevitable to raise the debt ceiling right now .... but balancing the budget is the only way to avoid having to do it until interest payments take up such a chunk that nothing is left for anything else. Clinton managed it for a while ....

Woke up this morning to hear the radio news guy saying that your politicians had been up all night working on a solution, but no results yet. And that it is now less than twenty four hours before "the deadline", after that the USA defaults on it's debt and can be declared legally bankrupt.
So I've been thinking: Winter hit here a few days ago with a (slightly too early) blast of extreme cold. I am fed up of our cold winters and would like a warm place to go to from about November to January. So if you guys go bankrupt and have to sell everything in a "going out of business" sale, I'm interested in one of the warmer, more southern states. Not too hot, and not somewhere that has hurricanes. Also not a landlocked state, I don't function well if I'm more than 90 minutes drive from the sea. So, Mr Obama, if you go bankrupt and need the money, and you got a spare state to sell that fits my needs (at a reasonable price) give me a call. ![]() Last edited by ecchi; 2013-10-16 at 03:40 AM.. U.S. mutual funds are not allowed to hold defaulted bonds. They'll all have to be sold. Wonder what that will do to the value of U.S. debt?
