Looks like Hunter S Thompson killed himself

From the Guardian...

Monday February 21, 2005 4:31 AM

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of journalism in books like ``Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,'' fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.

``Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family,'' Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.

Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

He wrote some great books. I liked his later stuff. Always a fun read.

As his creative collaborator and friend, Ralph Steadman remembers the author Hunter S Thompson :

Hunter said these words to me many years ago: "I would feel real trapped in this life if I didn't know I could commit suicide at any time." I knew he meant it. It wasn't a case of if, but when. He didn't reckon he would make it beyond 30 anyway, so he lived it all in the fast lane. There was no first, second, third and top gear in the car - just overdrive.

If you are quick you can read the full article here:
http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/b...p?story=613513
But they only keep the articles up for a few days.

"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like 'feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive ...' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: 'Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?'"

From http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2005/...834732018.html :
One of his most famous lines was: "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."

In recent years, Thompson had started to speculate about why he wasn't dead already. "The fact that I'm not dead is sort of puzzling to me," he said recently. "It's sort of an awkward thing to deal with."

Wow... that really sucks. I'm a big fan of his writings and movies.

"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."
- Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

With all respect to his family - privacy, my ass. He was a very public personality, and I feel we deserve at least a meager explanation.

That said, .

Will be watchin Fear and Loathing and Where the Buffalo Roam this week. Only seen Buffalo twice but watched Fear and Loathing like 100 times. Had a drug induced summer a few years back that was inspired by the movie. Good Times.

All the movies are great, but you really need to READ "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" or his Hell's Angel's books to really appreciate the man. In keeping the tradition alive...

I wouldn't even read this unless you have a real good sense of humor:
http://www.consumptionjunction.com/home.asp

Although, I consider it some of my best work.

It's offensive as shit, but it makes a point.
