.xxx Approved by ICANN

Will this do more harm than good?

".XXX has been approved.
A few days ago, ICANN -- the quasi-government corporation that oversees the internet’s naming and numbering system, approved the .XXX top level domain. .XXX will operate much like .COM does now -- meaning it will be a domain name people can type into their browsers to take them to a website -- but similar to the way .GOV is reserved for governmental organizations, .XXX will be reserved for pornographic or adult content websites.

Current expectations are that .XXX will be available for purchase and use by year’s end."

What Go Daddy founder Bob Parsons has to say on the matter.

Some religious groups oppose .XXX.
As can be expected, certain religious groups oppose .XXX. One is a right-wing group called the Family Research Council. They released a statement immediately after ICANN approved the .XXX extension. Its statement read as follows:

"The new domain would do more harm than good," said Patrick Trueman, FRC's senior legal counsel and former chief of the U.S. Department of Justice's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section. "The .com domain has been a cash cow for the porn industry and pornographers will not give it up and remove themselves to the '.xxx' domain. Instead, they will populate the .xxx domain and perhaps double the number of porn sites available on the Web."

According to the web news service PressEsc the above group also blamed the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq on MTV. So it makes sense to take what they say with a huge grain of salt.

So now if kids want to find porn sites quickly and easily they can just look for sites with .xxx domains.

That's my thought. At least that wacky religous group realized the true implications.

all .xxx is gonna do is fuck up the SERPs for those of us that are targeting "xxx" and the only reason that registrars and such are supporting it is becuase it will line thier pockets.... it opens up millions of domain names for them to make money on... how about we all decide just not to use it, keep business as usual, and it will be a big fucking flop and will go away... and if it is "imposed" on us it will be shot down so fucking quick in the courts that we will all get rug burn from being shot out of our comfy little office chairs (or in my case my king size bed)

Can I ask a dumb question?

Can ICANN close down adult sites that do not use .xxx?

All they did was approve it for use - and I assume they approved other extensions that didn't exist before last week - but none of them are getting this kinda coverage - unless there a message board full of travel agents screaming about the .travel extension that I don't know about.

This made me just about laugh myself off the couch. See your getting old GG your not up on the ENITRE web indsutry as you use to be, remember the time when you would of known exactly who was screaming where.

The .xxx thing in my opinion is something that will somehow take a spin on fucking with us in the future, if not than it's just another way for registrars to rip off another business type, in this case the "Oh so fat pockets of Adult webmasters"

XXX can only be bad. It's a blind alley. But it matters only if Google etc decree that it matters.

I exchanged several emails with new.net about .xxx and it simply came down to them saying that there is nothing more they can do. They had originally told me they would refund my money if I recently purchased any xxx domains through them. Then they said that if ICANN approved .xxx as a TLD then there would be the ICANN version AND the new.net version. For those of you who are not familiar with new.net, you have to install a browser plugin in order to view their extensions such as .kids, .xxx, .family etc etc.

So two things could happen when a surfer types in sex.xxx for example. The first being he would see the domain registered through ICANN. The second being his ISP or browser has the new.net plugin so he will only see the new.net version of sex.xxx.

Should be very interesting to see if this really happens. I don't see new.net being allowed to offer .xxx anymore and that anyone with a .xxx with new.net has just lost money... but I could be wrong.

What Go Daddy founder Bob Parsons has to say on the matter.
I like the fact that Bob Parsons thinks that registrars are going to shoot themselves in the foot if they try and push $60+ fees for registration. Here is what he said:

Quote:
Annual Cost of a .XXX domain name.
As of this writing, I do not know for sure what a .XXX domain name will cost. Early contacts we've made indicate that the price to registrars will be $60. Registrars will then mark it up from there, so it could very well cost the end user anywhere from $70 to well over $100, depending upon where it is registered. If that rumoured pricing turns out to be true, I personally think it's a dumb move by the registry, and that it will backfire in two ways. The first is that there will be far less adoption of .XXX (meaning many porn sites, especially budding ones, simply will purchase a .COM or .NET instead) and second, the registry will realize far less earnings that it otherwise would. I would hope the registry and ICANN both wake up here, and that the price to registrars is dropped to below $10.
I like that, and hope he will help break the norm, and GoDaddy will have $8.95 XXX domains!

well i dont know what the noise is about but if we will have also .xxx is it just better for all of us to grab some good and less good domains ? as long they wont touch our .com .net ... even let them release .sex .porn domains , but as far as i see it from SEO point of view google & yahoo just might give better ranking to .xxx domains to push them more and force more adult sites to transfer to .xxx
