Paysite tour page sizes and loads
I know we have talked on other threads about continuing to build 800x600 for free sites, but I notice a lot of paysite tours seem to be built for 1024 wide or more. Also the page loads. I just looked at a recently released site, and page one of the tour was an 1130 kB load!
I'm working on a paysite design, is is now ok to build pages with such high loads? Or do you think they are missing out on potential customers because they are waiting so long for the page to load, they bag? Geeze, I remember the days of trying to keep it to 100kB, lol.

Yes, a lot of paysite tours are built for 1024 wide or more. And a lot of paysites go out of business every year too.
Stick to 800X600 or you are throwing money away. A good percentage of surfers still use this, if you set your tour pages bigger they will just go and buy from your competition instead of you. |

I think it depends on the pasy site. If the tour is going to push HD vids and super high quality photos then you may want something that's larger then normal because you're target market will have broadband and larger monitors.
If it's just for a stadard pay site then 800x600 and fast page loads is a good rule of thumb. |

That makes sense. I was actually pretty suprised it was that high when I looked at it.

Size of a tour page doesn't concern me much as long as it doesn't take over a few seconds to load.

Took the hint.

I would add this: I am seeing the poorest sales generally on sites using the older style "panel" tours. Trying to make the tour fit in an 800 X 600 without any scroll in any direction I think right now reads as "this is an old site".
There is no magic, but as SirMoby said, it you are aiming to a higher end clientelle, then you probably can let yourself sneak out to nearer 1000 wide without too much problem, or at least using a full 800 rather than 720 or so to assure no side scroll. Alex |

I hate those panel tours. I might keep it 750 wide, but it will be long down the page. I am doing a "reality" style tour, since the content is niche, exclusive, and could lend itself to that style of tour, and that is they type of site I am comfortable designing, lol.
I have decided all that, even if I make the tour slightly wider, I will make sure the members area has no side scroll in an 800w screen resolution. Quote:

Remember too that with a long scrolling tour, you are often reusing the same graphics and pieces over and over through the page, so the overhead isn't anywhere near as big as the amount of page coverage you get. Keep the images sizes good and the compress on them tight, and the page doesn't have to be overwhelming to load.

Only a small fraction of my visitors are on 800x600 over 78% are on 1024. I recently was on the hun too, I was surprised that those surfers are even useing bigger monitors and resolutions. ALOHA

Monitor sizes are not an accurate indication of what size webpages surfers prefer, since like cleo says some people don't keep their browsers maximized, and people like me either have Pluck or Bookmarks in my sidebar for surfing, even though my monitor is set at 1024px+.

Try to use lots of actual text, rather than graphical text, in your tours. Give the surfers something to look at while waiting for the pics to load.
Also do any mouseover image loads with a Javascript:interative rather than using preloads. I hate looking at blank pages while waiting for the bells & whistles to get setup. |
