![]() Got up at 5am this morning to work on the computer. Five thirty and every socket in my apartment died, no electricity except the lights. Looked at the circuit breakers, they were all in the "on" position. Then I remembered that there was a message on one socket that said "fed from the fuse box in the hall", so I went out into the hall - could not find the bastard.
Not entirely a disaster, as I could still work. I ran a cable into the hall and leached off the landlord's supply (handy thing having junky neighbours - they regularly spend their electricity money on heroin, so have to do this for heat and light - they showed me how to do it ages ago). By then it was 6am, still too early to call the landlord. About quarter past eight I tried him, his phone was off. Eventually got through to him about quarter to ten. He was certain that there were no fuses in the hall (the note on the socket was written by the previous landlord). He was no electrician, but suggested I tried the "Microsoft method" to fix the breakers. Turn them all off, count to fifteen, then switch them on again. Do you know, it bloody well worked!!! Obviously there is a fault in the breakers. Landlord said he'd probably send someone down to look at them sometime, maybee....... I'm not holding out a lot of hope for a speedy result. It took him over a year to fix a faulty shower. Faulty breakers are more dangerous, but a while back one of my neighbours overheard him telling a council inspector who warned him about a fire hazard "It would do me a favour if the building burned down." So as faulty breakers are a major fire risk I'm not expecting him to do anything soon. |
