$10 a year isn't a high price to pay to get a dot com that suits your niche. A single sale from a smidgen of SE traffic can cover that.
Using subdomains makes it really easy for a whole shit load of freesites to dissappear all at once... or worse... Probably similar reason why a lot of LL's like to see a mixup between domains being used.
