It's pretty obvious, the why part, I think - 'cos once the line is crossed, it's hard to go back. Think about it: once you've fucked, you don't usually hear about people going back to protracted make-out sessions, right? Once certain forms of gonzo hit the market, it makes it difficult to put that genie back in the bottle - it became expected. I also think that there is a certain level of concern, at a subconscious level, that if backtracking is done, gains in what's acceptable will be lost.
