Sorry, never got back here to answer the questions you asked, but others did an I am glad to see it got fixed. You are not alone having problems with IE8/XP, it is a bastard of a setup and a lot of sites that load on both older and newer versions of IE/Windows fail on IE8/XP.

Yesterday I finally got Parallels with Windows XP up and running on a Mac mini and then installed IE8 into that. So now I'm able to test stuff under IE8 and the beauty of this setup is that it's running on a Mac that I can access via screen sharing so it doesn’t slow down my work computer.

I think I wasted more time trying to clean up that site then if I had just built it from scratch. Even this morning I found another minor issue. The person that built it had used Century Gothic in their stylesheets which would be great if all computers actually had that font installed so I replaced it with the Google front Didact Gothic that is being loaded from Google.
