I picked 12-24 hours because I think it's reasonable if it's a completely blind/unlooked-for first contact.
On a 9 to 5 style office email account, it could certainly be a day or so without much stretch of the imagination. I personally leave my email program open 100% of the time I'm online, and it checks for new email every 10 minutes because I want to be quick if theres an affiliate question or issue addressed to me.
