Afew jpeg questions

First I'd like to say HI all(guess this is a good place to start)
I'm a really keep it simple keep it stupid kinda guy,when it comes to HTML.I would like to make free sites to kinda get better at html..I thought about tgp's its on hold .Anyways I would like to know what a standard size for thumbs and pix is I compressed a 100k down to 42k at 500x375 pixels without losing it,but I look at sites and they are much bigger and i really don't know what size is right or what size the thumbs should be.Just lookin for a average I guess.
