can't see pictures on my site

Hi. I just signed up with a new host--all excited about not being sodomized by 3.80 per gig traffic cost anymore--and, on Wednesday, uploaded most of my main site to this new land-of-milk-and-no-buggery. Although the index.htm file and the gif and jpeg files on said htm are in the same folder and the link paths are relative--ie. src="image.gif"--I'm getting the broken link/image thing instead of pictures. The same is true for all the pages that follow. When I enter the url of the actual image file, it shows up just fine. Then, if I use my back button to go to that first page, the image is there. If, however, I refresh the page, the image is gone again. I know this means my browser cache is sticking the image into the page, er...I think I know that. I think I think that. I'm confused and unable to see what is probably staring me right in the face. Or biting me right in the ass. Or something. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I'd like to change my dns and start living the life of a dollar-a-gig-fatcat soon.
