Question about free sites

Hi guys, n00b here. Been lurking for a while and you guys give great advice.

As far as links on a free site, is it a no no to put a link on it directed toward your main website. I have gone down the Greenguy list in my niche checking out the various free sites, and have not seen any that do this. Or, is a free site just a 'stand alone' page that is intended at promoting one sponsor, not promoting a 'main site'? I imagine some surfers get curious and strip away part of the url to check out the root (like I did).

I was just looking at one of Lazzlo's posts, so I'll use that as an example.
browselingerie.com is the root, it's in 'coming soon' status, but if it were his up and running 'flagship' domain, could he put a link on the free site direct to that domain for promotion?

Sorry if I'm overlooking the obvious, or if this has been covered and I missed it, I searched but saw nothing directed at this question.
