Android Tablet Question

Can anyone with an Android Tablet advise me on this.

I have an external USB hard drive that I use as a back up, and also to transfer stuff between my laptop and desktop, by the simple process of plugging it into one, saving the file on it, then plugging it into the other, and copying the file into that computer's internal drive. I am considering getting a Android Tablet with a USB port, will I be able to do the same with the Android Tablet? The drive is formatted in whatever system Windows 98 formatted drives.
