We always have pint of super strong tequila in the medicine cabinet. (any 80 proof spirit will work) take a sip and rotate your head so the tequila is over the nerve that's hurting. Don't swallow it, let it sit there for 20 or so seconds. After 20 or so seconds, swallow it if you want, or just spit it out. The alcohol will numb the nerve. Then the benzocaine, and/or ice to follow. Works great for teething babies too. Just put a drop on your finger and rub it over the area. These tips from my Grandmother who never drank a drop for 96 years, and the closest dentist was over half a day by horse.
