I'd say stick with Gimp. It is a bastard to learn because the manual they supply is rubbish, but use Google to look up how to do things, someone has posted a tutorial (often with video) for every thing you need to know, somewhere on the 'net. Once you know Gimp well, it is (IMHO) a lot better than the last version of Photoshop that I used (which, admittedly, was a while back, but if it won't work on your new computer, then so is your version).
