Linklists and how they deal with older sites

I've been making free sites for over 3 years, and almost all of those free sites are still up. I actively maintain them, although don't change them unless a sponsor code needs changing. A lot of them are more than just the usual two gallery freesite - most have articles and other extras on them. They're not "create and forget" sites.

These free sites still have the URLS to all the linklists I originally submitted them to on the index page. (This is where I confess to being a technical dunce, so almost all of my sites don't use SSI or any other "easy-update" technique.)

A couple of days ago I realised a toplist I'd been sending traffic to was malfunctioning, and sending all my hits to their own paysite. Not happy. I now have to remove all those links.

It also made me realise that I'm still sending traffic (however small) and giving PR to numerous linklists who have long since removed me from their main category list. So I was thinking that it's time to do some resubmitting, get some more milage out of the work I've already done. So I've tried to resubmit my sites to places like Richard's Realm and Smut Gremlins since that recip is already up there, but the submission script won't allow me to do that. "Error: This site has already been submitted" it says.

My point here is this: All the usual rules threaten me with blacklisting, hellfire and brimstone if I remove a recip after I've been listed. Isn't it a bit unfair that linklists can do the same to me without so much as a warning email? Or even a statement that "your average listing will last x months, after which, you may remove our recip"?

And even if a site is not-so-new, wouldn't it be nicer to put the link in an archive rather than simply removing it altogether?

And is there any way that I can resubmit my sites??

Yes, this situation is partly my fault because my sites are essentially "hand tooled". I also realise that some will take issue with the idea of old content on old sites. In my case it's not such a huge problem since 99% of them are 4women freesites...

Unfortunately it is different with all lists...

Every submission to me is permanent, and is archived after time.. to my archive categories.

I know GG drops sites after 6 months if the site has not been changed or updated.

The others I cant speak for.

You can always update the site and re-submit it.. but it looks like you run into probs with the BL then.

I think it would require a quick email to the owners of the major lists you wish to re-list with, to get this sorted, and to avoid any further blacklist probs.

I know that Richard & Smut Gremlins use the same admin script as me & that error you're getting means that your site is currently listed (once a site is removed, it goes into a different database file that the submit pages doesn't look at) So resubmitting it would be a waste, seeing as it's already listed

That's just it, my sites AREN'T listed, they've been removed from the list, but I still get the same message. So even if I updated the site and submitted it again (same URL), the script would tell me I was already listed.

I had a heap of listings at Richard's Realm and they were all removed at once. I've tried to resubmit, same message. I emailed them a few months ago and posted a question here to no avail.

It looks like it's just time to go and take down all those links. I think it's a shame because a lot of my freesites are relatively unique within the niche...

By the way, my apologies for posting this in the general thread. I just figured I was asking a more general question about the ethics of removing links.

In the last 6 - 8 months, the drops off by 404 and redirect have been enough that I haven't had to cut things off. I try to keep a constant database size, to keep the pages manageable. So many domains dropping and people getting out of the business means that I haven't had to run a drop older for a long time.

I actually did a search to see how many free sites I had linked to Smut Gremlins and there's about 60 of them. So that's probably a few too many to list here. My original thought was to resubmit one or two a week...

in searching around about resubmitting sites, i found this post from last year.

at the time i'd only been doing FS about 3 months and resubmitting wasn't even on my radar.. but now 15 months later it is.

i have some questions:

GG: on the link you posted about about removal...

As long as a site is still active and my recip is still up, it remains listed indefinitely. While I may change this at some point in the future, I'll "grandfather" the sites in the database at that time and only apply the "expiring" listing rule to sites submitted after I make it. Feel free to submit to me with confidence.
