Well, obviously subdirectories would be easier, but I see a lot of subdomains at the top of the SERPS. You might want to consider a subdomain per niche and then subdirectories or individual pages in the appropriate subdomain for each site.

It shouldnt make a difference in the SEs - the reason so many subdomains are at the top of Google right now is most of them are either scammers, spammers or site rips that redirect to paysites. They are all mostly free hosts that have some built in popularity that transfers to new subdomains or in a lot of cases are old forums that have been hacked and are being used by the cheaters. Most of them last about a month and then a new set replaces them.

you should do it both ways, get twice the traffic and then you will see for yourself which works better for your style of site building and promotion.
