Do you negotiate price?
In general, do you always try to get a better price/deal on most transactions?
I joined a gym and tanning salon yesterday and didn't pay what was listed on price sheets- even with a sale. I had to learn that skill though...from time I spent doing sales. You learn the manager always has quotas to meet for the day/week/month and they want the sale rather than the person walking out the door. Do you negotiate whenever possible or do you pay "sticker" price? |

I haggle, the only time I didn't was when I was dating...as no woman should know you haggle until you marry them.

I learned to negotiate in business but in every day life I learned to work on it when I travelled. There was often the local price and the American price. |

My Russian friend Valentina does this everywhere we go, drives me crazy and I find it a bit embarrassing. Bargaining for popcorn at the movie theater after bargaining for the movie tickets both of which she never gets a discount on but always holds up the line doing it. She even tried to bargain down a cup of coffee at StarBucks the other day. She spent a week bargaining over a bicycle and in the end got $20 off the bike but this was after spending a week driving halfway across town a few times a day to do the bargaining.
I'm much simpler to do business with. Give me a far price or I turn around and leave. |

I will do it only sometimes, like when I had my front yard done. They wanted 5k, I ended up paying 3k and making the guy a basic website (cost me 45$ and 3 hours of my time). I just bought a Dodge Caravan, the one where all the sears fold into the floor, and I played with 2 different dealers on the price till one of them finally gave in and gave it to me at cost. There are limits though. I wouldnt argue the price of a chocolate bar or a bag of chips or even a pair of pants.. but somethings are meant to be negoticiated.

On a big ticket items (car, house, etc) I will but otherwise not. If it is a smaller ticket items (TV, stereo, etc) I will usually do research on the Net and find out where I can get the best deal and then just go buy it.

I use froogle.com, pricewatch.com or mysimon.com and then order 99% of everything I want online. I hate shopping. When I have to go into a store, its in, get the stuff, get out. Generally I'll use some guidelines to make sure I'm not going to get ripped off, i.e. one store's price magnitudes below everyone else, but generally, ecommerce is it.

Sure...I wouldn't argue popcorn or coffee.
Vehicles should always be about $500 or so below invoice unless it's a limited production model or you live in an area that has very few dealers. But if you were working on 2 dealers and they didn't do it- not much choice. $20 off a bike after traveling around...yeah- that's a tad extreme. You need to pick your battles so that they aren't more effort than the money off is worth it. |

Yeah- the net is great. I was looking for some blank DVD's and was about to get a 50 pack of maxell from Amazon.
I searched around a bit and found favorable reviews for a Japanese brand that I never heard of. I went to newegg.com and they had a 100 pack of that brand on sale with free shipping for $32.00. There were a fair amount of positive reviews for them so that was cool. Ordered them. The free shipping was ending that day too. Sweet. Yeah- big ticket items or services I'll use for a while is the stuff I negotiate on. |

I also use froogle when buying anything. Either that or Amazon. I am a prime member at Amazon so anything I order will be overnighted for $3.99 or regular shipping for free. It cost $99 to become a prime member and for someone that buys all Christmas gifts through Amazon, well worth it.

I spent 15 years in retail sales, mostly managing shoe stores. People that wanted to haggle over price annoyed me to no end. It seemed to be a cultural thing, most of the ones that seemed to need to haggle were not natives.
