bigballsbilly, nowadays no major SE gives meta tags any ranking influence.
If you do some research you'll find many top ranking sites that have no meta description nor keywords tags.

i did a quick one, searched google for: blue shoes.

the first result links to: www.uglydress.com/giantblueshoes.html
and guess what? RIGHT :-) NO META TAGS

It is much more important to focus on error free html code, link popualrity, PR and selling tactics..

Good Luck

100% Bullshit!

Meta tags are a fundmental element of html pages - all pages should have them

Definitely BS - the description meta is definitely used by Google as well as the title meta - and quite a bit

And just as important - think about what happens when you do get that #3 listing on Google - wouldnt you like that title and description to really draw surfers into your site - if you write them well - you can outperform the #1 spot easily - and google does use the title and desc in its listings as well as during its ranking

Second - the meta tags for how the SE bots react to a page are important so they should be in there as well

Last - Yahoo and MSN DO USE the keyword meta as well as the title and description tags - so definitely always use them as Dave posted
and the other part he was trying to convey I believe is that html pages should always have the tags to validate correctly - which is also a part of all SE's algorithms

100% Bullshit? RIGHT, Your reply is 100% Bullshit!!!

I agree that meta description tags are sometimes displayed by SE's. This doesn't mean they have any ranking influence

I think you need to REREAD & COMPREHEND what i wrote before jumping into irrelevant false conclusions.

Ranking Influence = Ranking Influence

Can any of you provide a proof that meta description or meta keywords tag are essential for good ranking in SERP?

I have provided a proof to my claim, let's see what you can come with...

(BTW, Title is not a meta tag.
Meta tags are clearly tags that begin with <META....>)

Suit yourself, Never heard of anyone who got ranked so well just because he used meta tags.

But why let newbies believe meta tags are such savior?

I'm waiting for a proof from you or any of the others that rushed to agree.

Meta tags have only one important influence on ranking and that is they can totally F*ck your sites ranking if

1) there are no meta tags (site considered "not search engine friendly"...go figure! site gets slight mark down)
2) Tags are too long (site gets marked down generally)
3) Tags have repeated keywords (gets marked down on just that keyword.)
4) Too many pages on site have exactly same keywords. How many times have you just copied em? Site gets general mark down on Altavista, Ask Jeeves, and Google. Other SE's dont seem to follow this rule.

They have NO positive influence on ranking but to say they are ignored is wrong.

Trust me I was working for a major UK automotive site that spent a fortune figuring it out!

Sooooooooooo...................

I addressed two things...

Firstly - Meta Tags are a FUNDMENTAL part of any HTML page on the WWW

http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/global.html
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/stru...l.html#h-7.4.4

If you don't use them you are not writing your pages correctly

Secondly - Meta Tags are used by many search engines(Search Engines), link directories(DMOZ), and Meta Search Sites(http://www.metacrawler.com/)

Eg: - http://www.google.com/search?num=50&...ve&btnG=Search

As Linkster said - wouldnt you like that title and description to really draw surfers into your site - and look at result number one...

adult links and porn - adult links to free porn sites, galleries ...
The only full list of free porn sites and adult links. DangerDave lists porn
sites, Pay sites, AVS sites,TGP galleries, TGP2 galleries, PicPosts,E-cards ...
www.dangerdave.com.au/

Oh! whats that two long lines of descriptive text about my site... IT's THE META TAG!!!

Last time I looked Google was still a relatively major search engine!

I invite everyone to listen to MD, and ignore myself and Linkster, and DON'T use meta tags in your pages....
Quite simply that would equal more and better listings and more money for us.......

DDave it's amazing the excellent presents we get every day from people that follow the type of advice given out by self-appointed SE experts - all of those sites that don't use the metas are just pushing me higher and higher - and I'm taking it to the bank.

As a side not for those that don't know this - a little tip - Yahoo started using the keyword meta again in their ranking scheme - actually happened last year but most people kinda ignored it - but definitely makes a huge difference

Hopefully everyone will be following yours and DDs advice - two webmasters which have websites which rank well in SEs and have done for a long time. I completely agree with what you both said. I also heard that yahoo is using keywords and that it gives points for keywords listed in the meta tag which actually appear "frequently" on your page. Yet still many people dont bother with them.
