Japanese school girls watch "The Ring"

I guess that this sort of horror/legend stuff is very potent and scary in Japanese society. They really are freaked out by it and a couple of them refuse to even watch or listen to it.

I didn't think The Ring was that scary.

The Ring is a copy of a Japanese movie. You get a bunch of school girls together and play any thing even remotely scary and they'll all start screaming like that.

Its more like they are scaring each other and feeding off each others fear then from the movie. With that much screaming how could anyone be scared?

Ringu (the japanese version of the ring) is a great movie, and so is Ju-On (the japanese version of The Grudge), far better than the american version.

A roomful of panicked, loudly screaming Japanese schoolgirls is scarier than any movie. |shocking|

The first time I saw Ringu, it was pretty damn scary. When I saw it, there wasn't much hype about it and I didn't know what to expect. For me, when I watch horror movies at home, I like to have the lights out, the surround sound pumped up and just the whole atmosphere. I popped in Ringu and watched it (subtitled of course...nothing is more distracting than having a good scare scene ruined by poor dubbing). When Sadako came out of the TV set, I admit to getting a chill down my spine.

I've become an Asian horror fanatic the last couple years and just can't seem to get enough. From "milder" fare like Ringu and Ju-On to Takashi Miike's messed up movies like Ichi The Killer and Visitor Q (yes, I'm a Miike fanboy and had a geekgasm when he made his cameo in Hostel ;-)).

Sorry, back to the topic at hand...
Ghosts in the machine are a huge part of Japanese cinema over the last 8-10 years. The ghost stories also have a similar type ghost white is usually female, dressed in white, with long black hair covering their faces (because of this people often get confused with Ringu, Ju-On, One Missed call, etc.).

Japanese schoolgirls? Not sure how they feel about the movie but there is a movie called Suicide Club that features an interesting scene with 50 Japanese schoolgirls (there was a little nod to the movie in Hostel).

I watched Ringu and The Ring and I thought both of them were pretty spooky. I liked Ringu better.

I'm a lot like Sykk in that I like to create an atmosphere when I watch a horror movie to enhance the effect.

If you've seen a couple asian ghost flicks, I'd suggest Takashi Miike's "One Missed Call" (yeah, there's an American remake of that on the way too). At first it seems like a typical lady in white with long balck hair story, but under it's surface it's actually a poke at those types of movies. Although the best of these types of movies is "The Eye". I thought it was better than Ringu, Ju-On, etc.

Someone convinced me to watch that one... I still haven't forgiven him!

Although, the room full of screaming Japanese girls does make me feel better.

A friend of mine told me the ring was good. I watched it and was scared shitless. I was alone, dark house and late. The thing that freaked me was in the start when they opened the closet an flashed that girls fucked up face. But now that I have a wife who is scared at just about anything. No horror movies in the house, period! I keep trying to get her to watch this and that's a no go.
