Preselling is really the key to getting signups. If a sponsor has quality hosted free sites, sending directly there probably will work. But, if not, you have to do the preselling yourself. I have tried it both ways and while I was able to send much more traffic directly to a paysite, the conversions were horrible. Once I changed the url to a good free site page, it converted much better and I made much more money.
