Both are from your neck of the woods. I was the super regional hub for this end of the country. Before it ended we were passing email via QWK, Fidonet and when I plugged in directly to the newsgroups. If you look at some of the old usenet messages you can still see the GonzoLand BBS tagline on a LOT of messages.
