Need a tool to make headers

Well, I got a version of Gimp that works on my 'puter without going into BIOS so I'm happy. One problem. I want a gradient text, where the color gradually changes from the top of the text to the bottom, but when I go to add the gradient to the text, the text disappears and I have the two colors, foreground and background, with the gradient, but the text is gone! |confused| Tom at Tom's Newbie Booster had a tutorial which I followed to the letter but I'm still lost. I think I'll get drunk and forget about it for a day.
