I think trades are good. But what goes for category trades I don't think they will do you any good, most likely get you looked as a linkfarm by mr Google.
Or am I wrong?
Linking to relevant content a bad thing? Don't put too much hope in google at first or really ever. SE traffic is going to come and go. Worry about making surfers happy and getting them as bookmarkers. In time google will come around.
