Legislators may limit Internet access to porn

When did Utah become part of China?

"Although the Internet is made up of networks that span the globe and reach far beyond state jurisdiction, there are limited steps Utah can take to reduce access to online pornography, lawmakers were told Wednesday."

Part of the story Jim linked to:

Quote:
He entered a search term that he couldn't recall Wednesday, although he said it "wasn't a real expressive sexual kind of word." And then, he said, he got caught up in a pornado -- sexually explicit pop-up windows took over his computer.

"I had this instant flash of pornographic trash on my computer that just started popping up," Brown said. "I could not turn it off. As fast as I would turn something off, something would pop on."

He had to turn off his computer to stop it, he said.

It could happen to anyone, said Sen. Scott Jenkins, R-Plain City.

"I've never opened a site in my life, but what pops up is unbelievable," he said.

I don't think the guy is very truthful...

Seems to me you have to click something to initiate the swarm of pop ups.

However, I do believe he would of had to turn off the computer to stop them once they started.

Now Google(pick a SE) would only return the results. He must have clicked a link, or his computer is infected.

This is what I am thinking too. Just another reason for us all to get together and kick the collective asses of people who use and profit from Scumware.

I bet this guy was actively surfing for porn and someone (his wife/pa) caught him and he concocted this story?

(Although a few years ago I was searching for mp3s and stumbled across shiteaters, so anything is possible)

Now that the cold war is over we're becoming exactly what we were fighting against. This would be unthinkable 20 years ago as they would be called "commies". People forget.

That is one of my personal pet peeves. The generation that brought us flower power, free love and taught us to watch out for "the man" is now the generation that seems to have absolutely no problem with restricting and even trampling on personal freedoms every chance the get.

I have a small theory about this. Have you ever noticed that born-again Christians were the most fucked-up out of control people you knew before they suddenly found religion? Every born-again that I know, and I know a few, were druggies, alcoholics, and womanizers. One day, these cocksuckers wake up and, due their minds being destroyed by years of drugs and alcohol, believe they've had some sort of religious epiphany, and find themselves drawn to their newest addiction: church. In their new life, the only way they can deal with the unhealthy level of guilt which they feel over their past, is to persecute anyone who is currently doing the things that they feel destroyed their own lives. There are few things worse than a burned-out asshole with a holier than thou attitude. (like my fucking brother-in-law)

Possibly true, but I believe the reality is that most of the "churches" which dabble in politics are essentially vehicles for those who operate them. And as Bush has now proved in two elections, these days emotive topics and slogans build audiences much faster and more surely than voices of logic and reason.

If you want to make money and wield power in the US today, there isn't a quicker or more certain way than by building a congregation based on prejudice. Sad, but that is the way it is...

I couldn't agree more. Many are still very extreme ... just in the other direction. A pendulum swings with the same amount of momentum acquired in the first swing - over time, maybe they'll come back down to a healthier balance, but usually not the ones who are still in full swing.

What sucks is over time these ideas become more cemented in their brains and while others hope for that extreme attitude to die down, it really becomes more difficult to undo...like Google's logarithmic PageRank algorithm and acquiring more page rank. lol. (there goes my focus.)
