You can't rest on your sites. You have to keep building.

Building in all kinds of different ways too. Blog networks, freesites, galleries. Not not just for submitting to link lists, etc. Building up your own web empire.

I know sometimes I sound like an AVS preacher, but I've made 4 AVS new sales today, all recurring and all from sites that are at least 2 years old. OK, I have a linklist with decent traffic and I reserve my top 3 spots in each category for myself but none of the sites that sold today have a better than average spot on it.
I've really just started doing free sites again less than a year ago and I have two sponsor sales from them today, one of which is a trial from an outfit that usually doesn't convert trials and that I don't advertise anymore.
Freesites are OK, but they are not the only way to make a living in the biz.
Tomorrow I might have 4 freesite sales and just a couple of AVS rebills.
A couple of cam sales and I'll be cool.
Diversify.

a lot of it goes by how well you been playing your cards

like how se friendly did you build your free sites and who you picked to submit to

I have sites 2 - 3 years old that still make sales

anyone can build free sites and build up a large number with a lot of work, but how well they rank in the engines is the key...

and how well you can pre sell and other factors

if a webmaster banks on a large number of free sites and galls waiting for sales from traffic pumps then your not gonna do very well in this biz

IMO I dont ever think a free site gets to the point where it could be considered dead for making sales...

you should try other niches cause one month something you never tried is selling like crazy
