Here are a few tips on ppc advertising in no particular order:

1. Use linking codes with tracking.
2. Create new ad group for each kw.
3. Try different sources.
4. Start slow setting a daily budget you can live with and build up your spending as sales increase.
5. Expect to lose money at first as you test, test, test.
6. Search out ebooks on doing ppc, especially the ones to do with writing your ad for higher CTR%. This will make your cost less on the big boys.
7. Not every paysite will convert with your keywords, no matter how bad ass you think the site is to begin with.

There are a few things to keep in mind, hope that helps you out some.

Does it make sense to use PPC to send a surfer to a paysite ? (one that you don't own)

All depends on your return of investment. If you make money, it makes perfect sense. On the other hand, if you lose your ass, well then it doesn't.
