Wink No smut please, we’re Canadian

The Canadian religious right are at it!

The reason why such praise-the-Lord preachers of piety are usually fobbed off and evoke very little else besides pity is that almost every single one of them has a skeleton in their closet - they have turned out to be womanizers, drug addicts, pedophiles, sexual deviants and con-artists. The louder they preach, the dirtier and the more deviant they themselves often are.

Hee hee
Watched McVety in a debate with an intelligent person last night, he was at a serious disadvantage
His arguments seem to come from some golden age of the "family oriented" past where any movie that's not appropriate for an eight year old is not appropriate for anyone, and making moral decisions for yourself is a mortal sin, punishable by law.
He's a funny guy in a non-haha sort of funny way, just funny peculiar.
If he lived a hundred years ago he'd be a prohibitionist, and would be ignored by Canadians in the same way as prohibition was.

Another article from the G&M.

Mr. McVety said films promoting homosexuality, graphic sex or violence should not receive tax dollars, and backbench Conservative MPs and cabinet ministers support his campaign.

I realized he was crazy after reading the part where he claims Canadians voted the PC into power because we wanted conservative values. I'm pretty sure corruption in the Liberal party had a lot to do with the PC's taking the ticket.

I hope this doesn't put an end to Canadian television programming with the words "fuck", "shit" and "blow job" during prime-time on Sunday nights. One Sunday night I watched two hours of CTV (A Canadian television network) just because the characters kept cursing. As a Canadian who grew up watching American media (my parents always had a satellite dish of some sort) watching Canadian television shows uncensored, during prime time, now is amazing to me.

If I remember correctly CTV used to air The Sopranos on weeknights uncensored.

That guy had to have been a Stockwell Day supporter.

He can squawk all he wants but I'm quite sure that the average Canadian out there feels as I do, that the level of censorship currently set on Canadian Television networks is just about right. When I want to watch a movie on TV late at night the last thing I want to see is that it's been censored to pieces in order that the odd 8 year old who might be up that late *might* be horribly scarred by the word "ass".

It is for that reason that I rarely if ever watch a movie on US stations. TBS, AMC, and even Spike, are the worst offenders. Movies on those stations are literally scrubbed clean of any trace of mature content. Seriously... what is the point of running Scarface on a channel like that? What, the violence is okay but God help us if a kid hears the F word?

What a world we live in.

I say either run a movie in it's original form or not at all. There are plenty of ways for parents to insulate their kids from objectionable content, it's on them to avail themselves of it.

Around the time I was in high-school I was home watching Much Music (Canada's less pompous MTV) and they played a music video with topless women in a pool. Bare tits and all. I thought they had made a mistake. This was in the afternoon. But one of the VJ's came on after the video (before commercial break) and said "you may have noticed the boobs in that video, we're allowed to do that once in a while."

While on MTV during those MTV Cribs shows you have MTV blotting out the guns in movie posters. I saw a gun on a Scarface (I think it was) poster blurred out in a rapper's "crib."

I'm a little miffed at Movie Central right now too. (Canada's HBO) On their station "Encore Avenue 1" they ran The Big Lebowski a couple of times last month. Literally every swear word was either blanked out or dubbed over. Now, I'm not exactly a movie buff or anything but I'm pretty sure that that particular movie isn't close to what it's full potential is without the strong language.

What an absolute disgusting tragedy.

All because a few people call themselves a censorship commitee and take it upon themselves to arbitrarily prevent anyone else from hearing anything they deem "unsuitable".

Carving up a film like the big lebowski is tantamount to the crime of manslaughter, and if I had my way each and every one of those who had a hand in it would do ten years in maximum security for it.

Am I kidding? You decide.

The Liberals had a similar bill before the Commons a few years back. I don't remember anyone taking a "smokey looper" back then. It died on the order paper (i.e. wasn't passed before the session of Parliament ended). The other interesting thing is that this legislation is before the Senate which means either the NDP, Bloq or (likely) the Liberals supported it in the commons. It doesn't make films with sex or violence illegal but instead forbids government funding of such films.
