Can anyone explain back links to me

I've been seeing and hearing about back links for a while now, but not really sure what they are and more so what they are used for. Anyone shed any light on them? Thanks

Back links are when a site links to your site via anchor text and your url. In a nutt shell it's used to give your site se relevance.

The more quality oneway back links to your site, the more preference your site is given in the rankings.

Niche recips aren't one way links. SE's started to "penalize" all these A-B-A trades a couple of years ago. Don't know why I still use them to be honest

It's curious but it works for me. My sites went up to PR2 yet I only have A-B trades for the most. I must have only one or two A-B-C trades.
