Some webmasters says they have been successful building blog networks using multiple top level domains (not sub-domains). (Of course these networks are most successful if the niches are related to one another.) They use a large number of unique IP numbers and link all the blogs together with hard links. In addition, they create "throw away" blogs on free blog hosts and use links to point them to their more valued TLD blogs. The hope is that this will increase PR (Page Rank) and give them a higher ranking in the search engines.
A few of pitfalls are the cost of the domain names, extra IP addresses and the need to update dozens or sometimes hundreds of WordPress installations.
