Turns out, to renew a drivers license in Florida after Jan 1, 2010, you need to present a Social Security card. Not having seen mine since the late 80s, I figured I better go get one. Got all of the identification paperwork together, arrived at 12:30pm (yeah, lunchtime), but, since people in Florida don't know how to parallel park, I got a spot reasonably close to the door. Touch screen device asks English/Spanish then has a six 'button' selector, prints out a number on a piece of paper, and done.

There were six different queues - for renewal, they went through the eight people ahead of me in about 40 minutes. Two minutes looking at my documentation, printed two pieces of paper, stamped and signed, here you go. Where's the cashier? oh, no charge - we don't charge for any services here.

Florida resident? don't laminate your social security card either - evidently that invalidates it.

Other than that, back to IPhone development for me. Android app is 'feature complete'.

Hope everyone has a good Leapy Hump day.

That is weird, I had to renew just this past year in July near my birthday, and did it online with no request for a social security card

Ah, I must have gone to an office the last time and this was my convinience renewal:

You must visit an office with these documents:

■if you are applying for your first driver license or identification card
when your current credential expires and you have already used the one-time "convenience" renewal option
■if you have changed your name since your last renewal (eg: by marriage or divorce)
If none of these apply then you can renew your license online, or by mail.

It's different depending on how many times you have already renewed your license. Everyone will eventually have to show up in person and show the required ID. The new license that is given to those that have shown up in person with the required ID get a license with a star on it that supposedly makes it easier to fly since it is a certified ID. I don't have to do mine for another three years but have already went down and got my brand new social security (with the raised seal) card and a fresh copy of my birth certificate (with the raised seal).

I have a friend that is America but was born in Vietnam and can't get their birth certificate so can't get their driver's licensee renewed.
