You have to click on a link somewhere in the admin to choose the image you want to show on the index page. I had to look for it too the first time I tried it

Thanks Fonz. I got it. Edit the post. Scroll to the bottom to "set featured image". Click on the Gallery tab. Scroll to the bottom and set use as featured image. Then update.

Wordpress can be a maze sometimes. Fun project though.
